Inshore โ€” red drum, trout, flounder

The sounds, the ICW, the marsh edges and the grass flats behind Topsail. One rod covers most of it.

The setup

7 ft medium-light spinning rod

$60โ€“200

Long enough to cast a light jig across a flat, soft enough to keep a trout pinned. This one rod covers reds, trout and flounder.

2500โ€“3000 size spinning reel

$80โ€“250

Sealed drag matters more than gear ratio in salt. Rinse it every trip and it'll last years.

10โ€“20 lb braid, 20โ€“30 lb fluorocarbon leader

$15โ€“30

Braid has no stretch so you feel the bite; fluoro leader is what the fish sees. Two to three feet of leader, joined with an FG or double uni knot.

What actually catches them here

Popping cork rig

$6โ€“12 each

The single most productive inshore rig on this coast. The pop imitates feeding shrimp, and a soft plastic or live shrimp hangs 18โ€“24 inches under it. Deadly over grass on a rising tide.

Jigheads, 1/8 to 3/8 oz

$8โ€“15 a pack

1/8 oz on the shallow flats, 3/8 oz when current picks up in the ICW. Carry both โ€” using too heavy a jig in skinny water is the classic mistake.

Soft plastic paddle tails and shrimp

$6โ€“12 a pack

Paddle tails in white, chartreuse or root beer. Scented shrimp imitations work when the bite is slow. Match the water: light colours in clear water, dark in stained.

Gold and silver weedless spoons

$7โ€“12 each

Gold for red drum over grass, especially tailing fish on a flood tide. Weedless so you can throw it right into the cover.

Topwater walking plug

$12โ€“20 each

First and last light over shallow grass. The strike is the reason people fish inshore. Don't set the hook until you feel weight.

Live bait: mud minnows, shrimp, finger mullet

bait $15โ€“40 ยท bucket $25

When the artificial bite dies, live bait still works. Mud minnows for flounder, live shrimp for everything. Local bait shops beat anything you bring from home.

Handling

Long-nose pliers and a lip grip

$20โ€“60

Trout have teeth and flounder have more. Pliers get the hook out fast so the fish goes back healthy.

Circle hooks, 1/0 to 3/0

$8โ€“15

For live bait. They set in the corner of the mouth instead of the gut, which is the difference between a released fish living and not.
