What to bring
Pick the day you're having. Everything is a generic type you can find in any tackle shop or big-box store โ no brand deals, no affiliate links.
A day on the sandbar
Masonboro, Bear Island, the Emerald Isle bars. No facilities, no shade, no shop โ whatever you didn't bring, you don't have.
Inshore โ red drum, trout, flounder
The sounds, the ICW, the marsh edges and the grass flats behind Topsail. One rod covers most of it.
Bottom fishing the reefs
Onslow Bay's artificial reefs and the live bottom offshore โ black sea bass, grouper, snapper, grunts. Heavier tackle and one piece of legally required kit.
King mackerel
Slow-trolled live bait off the beach and out to the reefs. Kings have teeth, so wire is not optional.
Mahi-mahi
Blue water, weed lines and anything floating. A long run offshore from Masonboro or Beaufort Inlet.
Bluefish and Spanish mackerel
Fast, toothy, and often right off the beach or in the inlet. The easiest offshore-ish fishing on this coast.
Prices are rough ranges to stop you overpaying, not quotes. Shop links are searches, so they keep working when a listing disappears. Nothing here is sponsored.
